Swedish Parliamentary Elections: Left-Wing Parties Lead as the Far Right Loses Ground

According to exit polls released after polling stations closed, the left-wing opposition is ahead of the right-wing alliance, which includes the far right, in Sweden’s parliamentary elections. The far right is also losing ground.

According to a poll conducted by public broadcaster SVT at 20:00 (18:00 GMT), left-wing forces are projected to receive 51.3 percent of the vote, while the right-wing bloc backed by the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) is expected to secure 46.8 percent. For the first time since the Sweden Democrats entered parliament in 2010, the party is expected to lose support and give up its position as Sweden’s second-largest political party.

Another poll conducted for TV4 puts the left-wing forces at 51.3 percent, while the current governing coalition is projected to receive 47 percent of the vote. Supporters gathered at the Social Democrats’ campaign headquarters erupted in cheers after learning that the far right was losing ground, chanting, “There is no place for racists in our streets.”

During the election campaign, healthcare and people’s purchasing power were among the main issues, while left-wing and centrist forces had long maintained a lead in opinion polls. However, the right-wing governing coalition, formed in 2022 and allied with the far right in parliament, regained momentum in the final days of the election campaign.
