Mosquito-Borne Viruses Spread Across Europe: Tourists Warned About Growing Health Risks

Cases of dangerous mosquito-borne viruses are increasing in several popular European tourist destinations. Doctors warn that some of these infections can damage the nervous system, cause paralysis, brain inflammation, and even lead to death.

According to foreign media reports, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Romania, and North Macedonia are among the countries facing the highest risks.

Experts say that recent unusually hot weather has created favorable conditions for mosquitoes to multiply rapidly.

Which viruses pose a threat?

Doctors say the main infections causing concern currently include:

  • West Nile virus

  • Dengue fever

  • Chikungunya fever

In most cases, infected people experience mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. However, in some cases, serious complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, brain damage, severe joint pain, vision problems, paralysis, and death can occur.

The situation surrounding the West Nile virus is particularly concerning. According to European media reports, dozens of deaths have already been recorded in Italy this season due to the virus.

Climate change increases the risk

Professor Rachel Lowe from Barcelona has stated that global warming caused by climate change is allowing disease-carrying mosquitoes to spread into new regions.

According to her, insects that transmit malaria, dengue fever, and other infections are now able to establish themselves in areas where they were previously uncommon. This increases the risk because local populations may lack immunity, and healthcare systems may not be fully prepared for such outbreaks.

The professor believes that longer and hotter summers in the coming years could lead to wider spread of these viruses.

How can tourists protect themselves?

Doctors advise people traveling for summer holidays to take maximum precautions against mosquito bites.

Recommended protection measures include:

  • Using mosquito repellents

  • Wearing long-sleeved clothing in the evening

  • Installing mosquito nets on windows and doors

  • Avoiding areas with stagnant water

Experts emphasize that if travelers develop high fever, severe headaches, skin rashes, or joint pain after returning from vacation, they should seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis plays an important role in preventing serious complications.
