5 Best Destinations for Your First Solo Trip
5 Best Countries for First-Time Solo Travelers, According to an Experienced Traveler
Solo travel has become a major trend in global tourism. Traveling abroad alone allows people to plan their trips around their own interests rather than the preferences of family members or friends. However, taking that first step can sometimes be psychologically challenging.
Caitlin Rosati, an American traveler who has visited more than 100 countries on her own, has shared five destinations she considers ideal for beginners in an article for Business Insider.
Rosati took her first solo trip at the age of 25 while working as a bartender in New York. On her 36th birthday, she crossed the border between Uganda and Rwanda, marking her visit to her 100th country. According to Rosati, years of travel experience have helped her identify destinations that are particularly suitable for people embarking on their first solo adventures.
Thailand
Thailand was the first country Rosati visited on her own. During that initial trip, she explored Southeast Asia's night markets, met fellow travelers in hostels, and discovered the country's local cuisine. When she returned a decade later, she found that Thailand remained an excellent destination for solo travelers.
The country offers experiences for different interests and budgets. In Bangkok, visitors can sample street food and dine at Michelin-starred restaurants. On the islands of Koh Samui and Phi Phi, travelers can relax on beautiful beaches or enjoy scuba diving.
Thailand's well-established backpacking culture and abundance of hostels also make it easier for solo visitors to meet other travelers and build new friendships along the way.
New Zealand
New Zealand is another destination Rosati recommends. She considers it one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with her road trip across the South Island leaving a particularly lasting impression.
Although she was accustomed to city life in New York and rarely drove a car, Rosati discovered the advantages of traveling in a campervan during a week-long trip.
Among the places she recommends visiting are Roys Peak, famous for its sweeping panoramic views, and Lake Pukaki, known for its strikingly bright blue waters.
Rosati also points out that she did not feel unsafe or uncomfortable while traveling alone and spending nights in a campervan. For beginners seeking independence and outdoor adventures, New Zealand can be an appealing choice.
Italy
Rosati describes Italy as one of her favorite destinations and the country she has returned to most frequently. In her view, traveling alone should never prevent anyone from enjoying places traditionally associated with romance.
For example, she recommends taking a gondola ride in Venice, even if being alone might attract the attention of other visitors.
Travelers who want to meet new people can consider food tours in Rome's Trastevere neighborhood or wine-tasting experiences in Tuscany.
Italy brings together historic landmarks, memorable food experiences, and plenty of opportunities for social interaction. Its diverse attractions make it a rewarding destination for solo travelers, whether they prefer exploring cities, discovering local traditions, or enjoying the countryside.
Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is one of the most interesting destinations Rosati has discovered in recent years. She admits that she knew very little about the country before visiting, but the experience left her eager to recommend it to other solo travelers.
Even without traveling companions she already knew, Rosati found opportunities to connect with other women traveling alone during walking tours and visits to local restaurants.
Samarkand, with its rich historical heritage and relaxed atmosphere, made a particularly strong impression on her. Tashkent also stood out, with visits to landmarks such as Chorsu Bazaar and the historic Hotel Uzbekistan.
Rosati additionally highlights the convenience of using public transportation. For people taking their first solo trip, being able to navigate a destination independently can make the experience considerably easier and more comfortable.
Iceland
Iceland completes Rosati's list. She identifies it as a destination known for a high level of safety, while acknowledging that personal feelings of security can vary from one traveler to another and depend on individual circumstances.
During an excursion from Reykjavik along the route known as the Golden Circle, she noticed that most of the other participants were also traveling alone.
Iceland's natural attractions are another major draw. Geysers, active volcanoes, spectacular waterfalls, and the Northern Lights offer visitors memorable experiences throughout the country.
However, Iceland has one significant disadvantage for travelers on a tight budget: accommodation can be expensive. According to Rosati's observations, even a single bed in a shared hostel room typically costs at least $50 per night.
For solo travelers who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor experiences, Iceland can be an unforgettable destination, although careful budgeting is essential.
Which Country Is Best for Your First Solo Trip?
The best destination depends on your interests, travel budget, and comfort level. Thailand may appeal to travelers looking for affordable experiences and opportunities to meet people, while New Zealand is ideal for those drawn to dramatic landscapes and road trips. Italy offers history and cuisine, Uzbekistan combines cultural discovery with convenient public transportation, and Iceland stands out for its extraordinary natural scenery.
For first-time solo travelers, the most important thing is to choose a destination that matches their expectations, research transportation and accommodation in advance, and take reasonable precautions throughout the journey.
Traveling alone does not have to mean feeling lonely. With the right preparation, it can be an opportunity to discover new places, meet people from different backgrounds, and gain confidence in exploring the world independently.
