Bill Gates Warns: “If We Lose Control of AI, We Could Become Like Pets”

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned about the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence, saying that urgent safeguards may be needed as AI systems become increasingly powerful.

Gates said that if adequate measures are not taken, the biological, cybersecurity and psychosocial risks associated with AI could emerge faster than its potential benefits. He has described the next five years as a particularly critical period.

According to Gates, AI could eventually surpass human intelligence, raising concerns about whether people will be able to maintain control over increasingly advanced systems.

He has also warned that AI could be misused by malicious actors for biological attacks and cyberattacks. In his recent discussions about AI, Gates has argued that the technology's ability to empower bad actors makes stronger safeguards increasingly important.

Gates has called for urgent mechanisms to oversee AI development, arguing that the industry cannot simply be trusted to regulate itself.

“If we lose control of AI, we could become like pets,” Gates has warned, highlighting his concerns about a future in which humans may no longer have the same level of control over increasingly capable AI systems.

At the same time, Gates has stressed that AI could bring significant benefits. He has pointed to its potential to create new opportunities and help solve problems in lower-income countries, particularly in areas such as healthcare, education and agriculture.

Gates has therefore called for efforts to ensure that the benefits of AI outweigh its potential harms, while governments and technology companies work on appropriate safeguards and oversight.
